“That guy”—are you sure? The article you link to mentions a Manuel, not a Miguel, Miranda.

Spencer, the last graf of your block-quote isn’t part of Gordon’s article. Doesn’t have that NYTimes magisterial je ne sais quoi, you know.

Wieseltier’s column reeks of self-satisfaction. Ah, yes, my son, someday perhaps you too will learn the disabused wisdom that sees without illusion the ruthless subhumanity of Palestinians, the inevitability of war with China as it “rises,” the eternal threat of the mystical al-Qaeda in its Pakistan lair. Our enemies are legion and they reject the gift of our logos, my son—we cannot talk to brutes. Be hard.

I wish we had more of this kind of media record-keeping. I’m tired of these high-profile hacks who get to present themselves as disembodied, pastless, recordless, unaccountable “experts.” People like this should have their past howlers stapled to their foreheads forever.

”. . . in the main, U.S. armed forces show more concern with not harming the innocent than has any military organization in history.” A rat couldn’t trip over that bar.

Autism might well have environmental causes. If so, it’s obviously very important to identity them. The only way to do that is through epidemiological studies, most of which will eliminate candidates as possible causes, narrowing down the remaining possibilities. Why, for God’s sake, are these parents fixated on vaccines when the epidemiology doesn’t support their claims? Do they seriously think that “a mother’s instinct” or their “passion” can reveal the causes of autism to them?

Unless I’m just getting totally unhip to what the kids are up to these days, David Packouz sounds like a masseur rather than a masseuse.
