AQI Will Follow Us Home? Really?

By Spencer Ackerman 04/09/2008 10:49AM

Gen. David H. Petraeus (WDCpix)A New York Republican named John McHugh conflated Al Qaeda with Al Qaeda in Iraq and asked the leading question: "We are really talking about the primary security interest of each and every American or do I have that wrong?"

Petraeus: "That is correct." Unbelievable. He really cherry-picks what strategy-level questions he wants to answer, doesn't he?

Crocker was worse. "Al Qaeda is a strategic enemy of the U.S.  It was dangerously close to setting down lasting roots in Iraq... If it were to have succeeded or succeed in the future, certainly my judgment is that the threat to the U.S. would rise significantly."

Read this and see if you agree. It's based entirely on a briefing from Petraeus's command.

McHugh, Petraeus, and Crocker aren’t the only ones who conflate Al Qaeda who attacked us with Al Qaeda we created by invading Iraq. John McCain has deliberately been doing it throughout his campaign. That’s in addition to his confusing Shia and Sunni insurgents and not mentioning Shia-against-Shia conflicts. We cannot have another president who either cannot grasp or is not interested in who the factions are in Iraq and the relationship of those factions to Iran. Voters need to pay attention to McCain’s failure to recognize and distinguish among the factions we’re facing and the need to deal appropriately with each.
